The Jewry Wall Museum opened up on Saturday 26 July offering another wonderful place for children who love their history in the city of Leicester.

We were invited down to take a look on the opening day.

We were very impressed by the facilities which included an immersive storytelling introduction by a young boy who lived back in Roman times, played by Leicestershire schoolboy.

The Jewry Wall itself is the remains of an old bath house and now inside the multi-million pound visitor centre you can walk around and get up close and personal with all of the artefacts that have been unearthed as well as new and exciting interactive storytelling.

The Jewry Wall Museum in Nicholas Wharf was opened by the Mayor of Leicester Sir Peter Soulsby who said: “Thanks to archaeological discoveries and interactive technology, the Jewry Wall Museum can reveal the public and private lives of the residents of Ratae Corieltauvorom like never before, telling their stories in new and compelling ways.”

As well as the Jewry Wall, one of the largest structures of its kind in the UK, visitors can enjoy wonderful artefacts in the museum include rare tapestries and mosaics and jewellery, pottery and coins as well as earth with dogs footprints in. It is a compelling attraction and is a great place for families to visit over the summer holidays.

Our daughter loved it and showed great interest after studying the Romans at school last term. She asked the Mayor lots of questions about how Leicester museums are great for kids.

Leicester has a fabulous array of museums, of which this is just the latest edition. There is The New Walk Museum (with a dinosaur and Egyptian mummies inside), Newarke House (which has a cinema experience, toys from Tudor times and a play area. There is also of course the King Richard III Visitor Centre.

Phil Hackett is the General Manager of both Jewry Wall and the King Richard III Visitor Centre and explained that there had been some delays but now it is open to the public.
